Why would a multi-award winning nationally acclaimed jazz trumpet player front a hip-hop band? Mainly because it's just one colour in Trinidadian-Canadian National Jazz Award winner Nick "Brownman" Ali's musical palette. He leads no less than 7 critically acclaimed groups of varying sizes all dedicated to evolving the art of jazz coupled with other musical ideologies. Brownman brings his jazz-hip-hop crew GRUVASYLUM to Hamilton on Apr 26. This group closes the gap between hip-hop and jazz exploring Brownman's belief that the improvised elements that drives a cypher's "freestyle" and the essence that fuels a jazz musician's improvised solo - are one in the same. Hip-hop, drum'n'bass, funk and soul all provide the back drop for this group's improvisational explorations, featuring Enlight - one of Canada's most conscious freestyle rappers.
