BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO winners of the 2007 Canadian National Jazz Award for "Electric Jazz Group of the Year" featuring Brownman - electric trumpet Fraser Hollis - acoustic bass Martin Auguste - drumset -- JazzOnline writes: "Nick "Brownman" Ali's powerful trio captures the essence of the later years in Miles Davis' life, his electric period, without imitation. Brownman's ELECTRYC TRIO is uniquely his own, yet echoes with the sounds of ‘Bitches Brew’ and ‘In a Silent Way’ right down to Miles’ use of electronics while still managing to stay grounded in the sounds of today, clearly paying apt tribute to Brownman's NYC mentor Randy Brecker. Impressive." |

Brownman & GRUVASYLUM From press release: Why would a multi-award winning nationally acclaimed jazz trumpet player front a hip-hop band? Mainly because it's just one colour in Trinidadian-Canadian National Jazz Award winner Nick "Brownman" Ali's musical palette. He leads no less than 7 critically acclaimed groups of varying sizes all dedicated to evolving the art of jazz coupled with other musical ideologies. Brownman brings his jazz-hip-hop crew GRUVASYLUM to Toronto's Trane Studio on Apr 29. This group closes the gap between hip-hop and jazz exploring Brownman's belief that the improvised elements that drives a cypher's "freestyle" and the essence that fuels a jazz musician's improvised solo - are one in the same. Hip-hop, drum'n'bass, funk and soul all provide the back drop for this group's improvisational explorations, featuring Enlight - one of Canada's most conscious freestyle rappers & Professor D - of the Dope Poet Society. |
